Sidney
Sidney was a much loved member of my animal family and was a pleasure to paint. It took me a while to get the right photograph but I think the wait was worth it. I particularly like the colours and the detail in this painting. Sadly, we lost Sidney in September 2008, but his painting takes pride of place in our home.
Attention to detail is so important - it's vital to get the eye and every individual hair and whisker just right!
I start my paintings by pencil drawing the subject and then adding the main colour before adding the detail, as shown below.

Dixon
As Dixon and his owners lived locally, I was able to visit in person and take some photographs to work with. Dixon was a magnificent horse with real character and I aimed to capture this in my painting of him, a birthday present. The photograph shown below was used for the shape, although I adapted my painting so that Dixon's tongue wasn't sticking out and his eye was softer.
I took a selection of photographs and was able to use different photographs to get the detail just right - one for his whiskers, another for his eyelashes, and from different angles to make sure I picked up on every little fleck in his coat.
Beauty
This painting has a touching story behind it - Beauty belonged to the commissioner's late wife, who was a professional photographer and had taken the original photograph.
Although the photograph was over 20 years old I made every effort to do it justice in my painting.
The painting was painted in various stages, with detail being added to produce the final result.
Sienna
Sienna's owner wanted a full body side-on painting instead of the usual portrait. I was able to use a selection of phorographs to produce the finished result.
The painting was based on the following photograph, with the rider and tack omitted.

I then used the other photographs, including the one below, to get the right colouring and body structure.
